Sturtevant trustees Tuesday approved 5-2 a land swap deal with neighboring Mount Pleasant, but whether or not it will be a done deal remains to be seen.
As part of the deal, Sturtevant would grow by 66-1/2 acres, and Mount Pleasant would get sewer and water service to a potential new business who might set up shop on Highway 11.
In a nutshell, Mount Pleasant approached Sturtevant about extending sewer and water west along Durand Avenue to a parcel just west of where UNFI is located. Since then, representatives from both villages have been in negotiations to hammer out a deal that gives both communities what they want.
On Tuesday during the regular board meeting, Sturtevant trustees – Gary Johnson and Jayme Hoffman dissented – voted to approve the deal that would make the new tenant a Sturtevant sewer customer. The 66-1/2 acres that would transfer into Sturtevant are comprised of three parcels currently owned by the Borzynski family, the Racine Zoo, and the Hoegsted family.
“Village residents are getting 66 acres that are very attractive to developers,” Trustee Chris Wright said. “Sewer capacity is reimbursed by the customer so there’s no cost to Sturtevant taxpayers.”
Mount Pleasant Village Administrator Kurt Wahlen would not confirm any details because the parties are still in negotiations.
“The details in this matter are still being worked out,” he told Racine County Eye in an email.
