One lane in each direction on I-94 at Highway 20 closed last week so reconstruction of the interchange can get underway, and the southbound on- and off-ramps close Friday for the summer and early fall.
While two lanes in either direction will remain open, the lane closures are the first step in moving southbound traffic into the northbound lanes tomorrow, a story at WITI Fox News reads.
Once the traffic pattern has been moved, the southbound overpass will be torn down and a new one built. On- and off-ramps for the southbound lanes will also close during the construction, so drivers will need to use the Highway 11 or Highway K interchanges.
The state Department of Transportation website lists the overpass as coming down still this month.
Work on the southbound side of the interchange mirrors work done last year on the northbound lanes and is expected to last through the summer and complete sometime this fall, weather depending.
The Highway 20 interchange project costs $23 million and is one of 17 that will be addressed during the multi-year, $1.7 billion expansion of I-94 from downtown Milwaukee to the Wisconsin-Illinois border.
