A proposed $6 million gas station/restaurant/convenience store at the corner of Spring Street and Highway 31 will go to a public hearing and special Planning Commission meeting early next month.
Mount Pleasant Community Development Director Logan Martin confirmed for Racine County Eye that Mike and Jim Willkomm’s proposed development is scheduled for a May 5 public hearing so trustees can hear comments both for and against the plan.
The WillKomms told The Journal Times they have options to purchase on 11 properties totaling 4.5 acres between Spring Street and Sunnyside Avenue to make way for a combination gas station, restaurant, convenience store and car wash. It will be similar to their property on Washington Avenue, but instead of a Burger King they will instead open a second Dish location, an independent restaurant they own.
They’re hoping to complete construction and open later this year.
The public hearing is required because so many of the properties needed for the project are currently residential and would have to be rezoned to commercial.
Residents who live on Sunnyside are worried about the increase in traffic and noise and the possibility of assessments if the road needs improvements to handle the weight of more cars and trucks, the story continues. The WillKomms think their proposal makes sense for the area, largely considered to be one of the busiest intersections in the county.
Commissioners will vote May 6 during a special Planning Commission meeting to recommend the plan or not before it goes to the Village Board for a final decision.
