Racine County supervisors Thursday night unanimously approved a $40,000 grant for a temporary overnight homeless shelter.
Pastor Holly Anderle confirmed the vote for Racine County Eye Friday morning.
Anderle is one of the clergy leaders of Segue Racine, a grassroots group focused on establishing a long-term, low-barrier overnight shelter. Segue Racine announced in April that a generous couple -Terry and Gloria Pogofsky of Glenview, IL – donated a former tavern on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive to serve as a long-term emergency overnight shelter across the street from Julian Thomas Elementary School.
Pushback from the community forced Segue to look for another solution with area leaders, including County Executive Jonathan Delagrave who proposed the grant to pay the $8,000 monthly rent for five months for the second floor of the United Way building on Domanik Drive.
The Segue shelter will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Nov. 1 through March 31 and will offer connective services like drug and alcohol counseling, employment and veterans assistance and mental health resources.
A long-term solution is still needed, Anderle added, and the Segue group plans to keep working with the community to make that happen.
