Completion of the Village Of Mt. Pleasant Police Department‘s indoor firing range looks like it’s within reach thanks to a $75,000 matching grant from SC Johnson.

MPPD Chief Tim Zarzecki told trustees Monday night that he has almost $120,000, primarily from donations and impact fees, and $150,000 pledge from the City of Racine.

“I’m pleased to report that SC Johnson has committed to contribute $75,000 as a challenge grant,” he said. “They will match donations dollar-for-dollar up until May 2014 to help pay for the shooting range.”

The grant from SCJ and related donations would then total $150,000, leaving about $30,000 yet to go.

Zarzecki told The Journal Times that he hopes SC Johnson’s contribution will inspire others to come forward so the department can reach its goal of $450,000.

Having a firing range located at MPPD headquarters will save taxpayers money because instead of paying officers to visit local shooting ranges while they’re off duty, officers can take an hour out of their regular day to practice in uniform and available to take calls.
