A Caledonia man was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving at 1:54 a.m. Dec. 26, according to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.
Peter Meekma, 30, of Caledonia, was charged with drunk driving (3rd offense), refusing to submit to a blood draw, and three counts of bail jumping by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office. If convicted of all charges, Meekma faces up seven years seven months in prison and/or fined up to $32,000.
According to the criminal complaint, an officer with the Caledonia Police Department stopped Meekma, who was driving his car southbound on Highway 32 at Johnson Avenue at 50 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer asked Meekma several times where he was coming from and where his address was, but his speech was heavily slurred and he smelled of alcohol.
After failing a field sobriety test, the officer took Meekma to the hospital for a blood draw. However, he refused and the officer had to get a search warrant before the blood was taken from Meekma, who had been out on bond for a hit and run, and drunk driving arrest in Kenosha. Meekma, who signed a $4,000 signature bond, has a preliminary hearing set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 8.
