Shane Trentadue

Racine police say a 26-year-old man admitted to shooting heroin before attacking a woman early Thursday morning. He is now in jail facing domestic abuse charges on top of several counts of theft because he is also accused of stealing jewelry from a relative.

Shane Trentadue, of Racine, was charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single felony county of suffocation and strangulation, domestic abuse assessments and one misdemeanor count each of battery, domestic abuse and disorderly conduct, domestic abuse. He is also charged with nine counts of misdemeanor theft. If convicted of all charges, Trentadue faces up to 13 years, nine months in jail and/or $111,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaints, Racine police were called to a residence in the 3700 block of Douglas Avenue early Thursday morning for a report of an assault in progress. When officers arrived, they found a woman and a child in a car outside the home because the woman said she feared for their safety and that Trentadue was in the apartment waiting for police.

The woman told police Trentadue came home drunk and they started arguing. Officers say the woman said the defendant slapped her, and she hit him back. Trentadue then put the woman in a head lock and was choking her. She managed to get free and tried to leave the residence with the child, but Trentadue pushed the child away to get at the woman again, pushing her into a dresser.

Trentadue told the woman, “Life is long, and I won’t forget,” the complaint reads.

When police took the defendant into custody, they say he refused to submit to a breathalyzer but did admit to shooting heroin 20 minutes before officers arrived and was afraid of going through withdrawals.

Trentadue is also accused of stealing several pieces of jewelry and a saw from relatives over a period of several weeks last November and then selling the items to at least two local pawn shops. According to the criminal complaint, the victims say they suspected Trentadue because he is a heroin addict and had stolen from them before.

Caledonia police were able to obtain sales records for the items – including photographs – that allowed the victims to identify their property. All told, the items Trentadue is accused of stealing come to $4,430.

Trentadue remains in the Racine County Jail on a $500 cash bond for each case. In both cases, should he post bond, he is prohibited from having any contact with the victims and from possessing or consuming any controlled substances.

For the domestic violence charges, Trentadue will next be in court on Jan. 16 for a preliminary hearing, and for the theft case he is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Feb. 6.
