If you missed attending the Mount Pleasant Village Board meeting Monday, we’ve got a handy round-up for you. Don’t forget that our friend, Rees Roberts, also records the meeting for your listening pleasure:
Approved: Municipal parking tickets are going up. Village prosecutor Ed Bruner explained that Judge Michael Phegley often reduces traffic violations to lesser charges if the driver deserves the consideration. Taking this step also keeps the legal process moving, Bruner said. Doing that, though, lowers the total amount of the fine which is then split between the village, the county and the state. Parking ticket revenue, though, belongs totally to the village so raising the fines helps the village cover certain court costs.
Approved: Any resident who wants to run for municipal judge will now have to be a resident of the village and an attorney in good standing licensed by the state.
Approved: Trustees approved the remounting of two, 2005 model ambulances for a total of $218,000. Each unit will take about 90 days for the mechanical work and another 10 to be fully outfitted with radios and South Shore Fire Department decals.
Approved: The village now has a sex offender ordinance that mirrors surrounding communities. In short, trustees approved creating buffer zones and limiting residency to released offenders under state Department of Corrections supervision who were Mount Pleasant residents when they committed their offenses. Mount Pleasant police Chief Tim Zarzecki told the board the DOC has some concerns about the way ordinances are written because sex offenders could end up homeless and unmonitored. But, the chief advised trustees to pass the ordinance and to work with DOC on a solution across the county.
Approved: Liquor license for Wing Stop’s return to Mount Pleasant. Trustees made the approval conditional on the restaurant passing requisite inspections and background checks. Wing Stop was previously located in a strip center fronting Walmart on Durand Avenue, and the new location on Highway 20 in the old George Webb’s is expected to open sometime in the next couple of months.
