Mount Pleasant police say a 40-year-old man is facing domestic abuse charges after he beat a woman Sunday.

Willie Hamilton, of Mount Pleasant, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count each of substantial battery, domestic abuse; false imprisonment; and intimidation of a victim as well as a single misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, domestic abuse. If convicted, he faces up to 19-3/4 years in jail and/or up to $46,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to a home in the 6500 block of Casper Court Sunday for a report from a woman who said a man was beating her up. When police arrived, the woman told them she was doing housework when Hamilton started an argument with her that escalated into violence. The woman told officers the defendant had been drinking.

Officers say the woman reported Hamilton swearing at her and when she told him not to use language like that in front of children, the defendant began punching the woman. The woman told police the fight moved from room to room, with Hamilton punching, kicking and hitting her repeatedly. She told police she did not know how she got a laceration over her eye, but she was able to run out of the home in order to call police.

When officers questioned Hamilton, he admitted to hitting the woman, saying, “I popped her,” and using a punching motion with a closed fist, the complaint reads. Children who were present also told police they witnessed the fight, and police say there was blood spattered throughout one of the bedrooms in the home.

At his initial appearance Monday, Hamilton was given both a $1,000 cash and a $1,000 signature bond. Should he post bail, he was ordered not to have any contact with the woman, the home or anyone else who lives there.

Hamilton remains in the Racine County Jail as of Monday night, and he will next be in court on Feb. 5.
