After the devastating fire at Mitchell this week, elementary students will be relocated to Wind Point Elementary next week, but classrooms there need stocking and students need supplies replaced.
And with 80 percent of the students at Mitchell Elementary qualifying for free and reduced lunches, these families can’t afford to replace a lot of the supplies.
We’re hearing about a lot of response to this problem. Here’s what’s happening in the community and how you can help.
Sturtevant Trustee Chris Larsen and his family is organizing a supply drive to help teachers get their rooms ready to welcome students.
Mitchell Elementary PTA is asking for used books to replace the ones they lost in the fire. Melissa Young Schroeder, a member of the North Park PTA and Cub Scout leader, is doing a book drive at North Park, but as a Cub Scout pack. She’s asking the community to donate used books and drop them off from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Andrews Church, 1015 4 Mile Road, in Caledonia.
Olympia Brown Elementary, 5915 Erie St., and Schulte Elementary, 8515 Westminster Drive, Â are collecting books and school supplies. They already collected $200 at the sock hop they held last Friday.
Donations of school supplies, kids backpacks and coats are being collected at the Racine Education Association (REA) office, 1201 West Boulevard. The kid’s backpacks and coats are for those who lost the ones they had in their lockers.
You can also drop off school supplies at any of the Racine Fire Department stations.
Buona Vita Pizzeria Restaurant: We have been working with the Officials at Racine Unified School District and were able to start collecting donations for students and staff who were affected by the horrible fire at Mitchell school. We also had an opportunity to THANK and talk to all of the hard working custodians working on preparing Wind Point Elementary School by DONATING pizzas to them this afternoon. They shared with us that Mitchell library is totally damaged beyond repair, SO WE ARE OFFERING $1 OFF ALL PIZZA FOR ANY NEW OR GENTLY USED BOOKS TO RESTORE THEIR LIBRARY!
Malicki’s Piggly Wiggly, 5201 Washington Avenue. From their Facebook page:Â Due to the recent fire damage at Mitchell School, we have set up a “round up” program to raise money to help with purchasing school supplies.
Throughout the month of March, our cashiers will ask you if you would like to round up your transaction to the nearest dollar amount. By doing so, we hope to help purchase supplies for the students.
If you know of any other fund-raising efforts, feel free to add them to the comments section of this story.
