A nine-year-old girl was bitten Monday afternoon by a pit bull Mount Pleasant police say lives at the same home where officers shot and killed another dog last October.
According to a press release from MPPD, the girl and a friend were walking in the 1400 block of Rosalind Avenue at 3:15 p.m. Monday when a dog ran out from between two houses and bit the girl on the leg. When the girl fell down, the dog bit her in the head.
The girl was treated by members of the South Shore Fire Department in a home in the Lake Park neighborhood for cuts to her face and cuts and a puncture wound to her leg. She told police she believed the dog bit her four or five times.
Two adult witnesses came to the girl’s aid.
“They were able to prevent the girl from becoming victim to further attacks as they scared the dog away from her,” MPPD Sgt. Eric Relich wrote.
Officers determined the dog lived at a home in the 3200 block of Sheridan Road, and issued a $124 citation to April Carver, 35, for having a dog at large. She reportedly told police the dog is only five months old and is not vaccinated against rabies.
This is the same house where police shot and killed another pit bull last October after answering a call for a dog at large. During that incident, police were unable to safely contain the dog and were instead forced to shoot it when it rushed at responding officers. During a subsequent search of the property, officers recovered quantities of illegal drugs and drug equipment.
The dog from Monday’s incident was caught and taken to Wisconsin Humane Society where it remains in quarantine. The Central Racine County Health Department will perform any necessary follow-up.
