Handcuffs

Racine police say a man and woman were involved in a domestic dispute that left their kitchen a mess and both of them in handcuffs.

Kevin Sell, 53, and Samantha Gerger, 37, both of Racine, are facing single misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, domestic violence. Sell faces an additional misdemeanor charge of battery. If convicted, Sell could get a year in jail and/or up to $11,000 in fines. Gerger could see ninety days in jail and/or up to $1,000 in fines.

According to their criminal complaints, Racine police met Gerger in the lobby of the police department at 12:56 p.m. Saturday and noted that she had a shaved head, bruises and scratches on her face, head and hands. She told officers that she and her boyfriend had gotten into a physical altercation because Sell had been drinking for the last several days, and she’d yelled at him to stop.

Gerger said Sell had punched her in the back and side and pushed her face into the glass shards on the kitchen floor. The bruise on her hand was caused when she attempted to block a punch to her face, the complaint continues. Gerger told police she’d shaved her head to keep Sell from grabbing her by the hair and dragging her around their apartment.

Officers made their way to the couple’s home in the 800 block of Grand Avenue to apprehend Sell. When they arrived, police say Sell was cleaning up broken glass and raw hamburger meat that was strewn about the kitchen. He was not surprised to see officers and told them that Gerger was the one who had broken the glasses and thrown the meat.

Witnesses backed up Sell’s statement, the complaint reads, and they also said altercations between the couple are more the norm rather than the exception. Sell was taken into custody and transported to the Racine County Jail. Gerger was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries and then she, too, was taken into custody and transported to jail.

Gerger was still in jail Monday night after being assigned a $150 signature bond and told to stay away from Sell as a condition of her bail. Her next court date is April 14. Online court records do not list any updates for Sell, but he was not on the RCJ inmate list as of Monday evening.
