A 26-year-old Caledonia was charged with domestic abuse charges by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office on Friday.
The man was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery, domestic abuse. If convicted, the man faces up to 18 months in prison and/or fines up to $20,000.
According to the criminal complaint, the Caledonia Police Department responded to a report of an assault in progress at 5:59 p.m. on Thursday at an apartment building in the 4000 block of North Main St.
The man told police that that he and his girlfriend were fighting over a foodshare card. Police noted that the man had been drinking.
He said he wanted to use the food card to buy a meal at the grocery story, but his girlfriend did not want to give the card to him.
The man tried to take the card from the woman by reaching into her pockets when she grabbed him. The man pushed her off of him. He told his girlfriend that he’s the reason she she gets the money and he’s entitled to use it, according to the complaint.
The man’s girlfriend told police she had come home from school and found him drinking while watching their children. The woman told police that she didn’t want her boyfriend to drive or use the card, which is the reason her boyfriend got angry.
During the altercation, the woman had a scratch to her thumb.
Police arrested the man and ordered him to not have contact with his girlfriend for 72 hours.
