Caledonia police continue to search for the culprits who decapitated Clifford, the Gifford Elementary School mascot.
The vandalism is believed to have happened between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday when faculty and staff began arriving to begin the school day.
School principal Gayle Titus told reporters at WISN 12 News that students were upset when they saw Clifford’s head was missing.
“The children all know Clifford and love Clifford, and they were pretty sad when they came in today,” she is quoted as saying.
CPD Lt. Gary Larsen said a similar incident happened in 2005, but media attention prompted the anonymous return and re-attachment of the gator’s head. He said the suspects are probably some young people playing a prank.
Still, the Gifford Elementary family would appreciate the prompt return of Clifford’s head, and Crime Stoppers of Racine County might offer a reward for the tip that leads to the arrest of the perpetrator(s).
