Going green just a got a little easier at Washington Park High School thanks to a $1,000 Youth As Resources (YAR) grant from United Way of Racine County.
Students in the Park High School Key Club will use their funds to place 90 paper recycling barrels throughout the school. The custom decorated barrels will, hopefully, encourage the entire Park community to recycle paper instead of just throwing it away.
YAR awards $1,000 grants to youth and student groups throughout the county that work on community service projects to address specific needs, according to a press release from United Way. Since 1996, some $260,000 has been awarded for more than 390 youth community service projects.
Two additional projects also received $1,000 grants: “Young Eagles Rally at KBUU” from Burlington High School’s Driven Leadership Program to introduce kids to aviation, including a free flight; and Focus on Community’s Teen Peers’ “Teen Institute” to provide scholarships to local high school students to a leadership conference that promotes positive life skills.

Groups interested in being considered for a grant can register for an information session, review funding guidelines and access the grant application at www.unitedwayracine.org/yar. Grant applications are now being accepted for the April 1 and May 1 deadlines.
