A Mount Pleasant police officer says they were bitten and punched by a drunk teenager who is now facing battery charges.
Kailyn Delnegro, 19, of Mount Pleasant, was charged Wednesday in Racine County Circuit Court with a misdemeanor count each of disorderly conduct and resisting an officer as well as a single felony count of battery to a peace officer. If convicted, she faces up to seven years in jail and/or up to $21,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, Delnegro had a blood alcohol of .254 and was under evaluation at Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s. Officers were called to help subdue her after Delnegro removed her IV and was walking down a hall in pants and her bra. Hospital personnel were able to get her back in bed and her IV re-inserted and reported that Delnegro seemed to have calmed down.
Police say Delnegro didn’t stay calm for long. She attempted to get up and remove her IV, and, despite commands from officers to sit down and stay in her room, continued to resist. Delnegro swung two or three times at officers and when police put her in a control hold, she bit down on the officer’s leg and tried to take their taser.
Officers managed to disengage their leg from Delnegro, and it took eight members of hospital staff to hold her down so they could sedate her, the complaint reads. She was secured to a gurney with leather restraints, two sets of handcuffs and a spit mask.
The complaint does not indicate why Delnegro was in police custody.
At her initial appearance Wednesday, Delnegro was assigned a $400 cash bond as well as a $1,000 signature bond and was ordered to not consume or possess any alcohol. Delnegro was also ordered to wear a SCRAM unit, which measures alcohol in perspiration. She will next be in court April 17 for her preliminary hearing.
