A 25-year-old Racine woman is facing drunk driving charges with her baby in the backseat after Racine County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop.
Richanya Butler was pulled over at 3 a.m. Friday for speeding and lane deviation, a written statement from RCSD reads. When deputies made contact with her, they said they observed a 15-month-old child lying in the backseat without a carseat or a seatbelt.
Butler told deputies that her passenger was child’s father, and he was passed out because he was drunk, according to a written release from the RCSD. At some point, it was determined that Butler was also under the influence and deputies noted that both Butler and the child’s father were wearing seatbelts.
Dispatch ran Butler’s name and informed deputies that she had two outstanding warrants; from RPD and from the City of Oak Creek. Deputies say she was taken into custody for those warrants and for operating while impaired with a child under the age of 16, first offense. Butler also received citations for violation of child safety restraint, deviation from designated lane, and operating without a valid driver’s license.
Racine County Human Services was notified and the baby was turned over to a relative. Butler was instructed she could not have unsupervised contact with her children.
Online court records do not indicate if Butler had her initial appearance Friday, and online inmate records do not list Butler in the records.
