Law enforcement looks to be one step closer to solving the murder of 18-year-old Berit Beck from Sturtevant.

Beck disappeared July 1990 while she was on her way to Appleton for a computer seminar and was last seen at the Forest Mall in Fond du Lac, according to a story from WISN 12 News.

Her body was discovered six weeks later in a ditch in Waupun. Evidence recovered from her vehicle at the time was inconclusive.

But now, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department believes Dennis Brantner, 60, is the prime suspect in Beck’s death. He lives in Kenosha now but lived in Fond du Lac and worked as a trucker at the time Beck went missing. Evidence inside Beck’s van lead investigators to target Brantner for the crime.

“We have tangible, physical evidence to put a prime suspect … intimately in the interior of the van,” Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink is quoted as saying.

Deputies attempted to serve a search warrant on Brantner Monday to get photographs of his hands, but it was not successfully executed.

Beck’s mom, Diane Beck, told WISN that she has never given up trying to find her daughter’s killer.

“I made a promise at her gravesite that I was going to keep this going as much as I could and for as long as I could,” she said.

This is the best evidence the FCSD has had in the 23 years since Beck’s death, Fink added, despite not having enough evidence to actually make an arrest.
