Mount Pleasant police say a 21-year-old Illinois man was arrested Wednesday for stealing a car from McHenry County.
Jeffrey Struck, of Crystal Lake, IL, was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single felony count of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. If convicted, he faces up to 3-1/2 years in jail and/or up to $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, a resident in the 1600 block of N. Green Bay Road called police shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday because a car was blocking their driveway and a man walking through their front yard. When officers arrived they noted that two cars were present though one was pulling way, and it did appear that one of the vehicles was disabled.
Police say they identified Struck as the driver with his valid driver’s license, but when they ran the plate of the car – a blue, 2003 Chevy Impala – it came back as reported stolen out of McHenry County Sheriff’s Department in Illinois. Struck was told the car came back as stolen, but he told officers that he had permission and a spare set of keys from the owner and that he was driving home from Milwaukee when the car broke down.
Officers say Struck was cooperative and understood that he had to spend the night in jail. The car was towed to the Mount Pleasant police impound lot.
Struck remained in the Racine County Jail Tuesday night on a $1,000 cash bond, according to online court records. His next court date is April 17.
