Members of the public works committee denied a request last week from Trinity Church, 7900 Nicholson Rd., to put in a flashing stop sign at 7 Mile Road and Nicholson Road.
Caledonia Police Chief Toby Schey explained that there were nine traffic accidents since 2011, four of which involved injuries and there was a fatal car crash seven years ago. Several pine trees near the intersection may be impeding motorists’ view and drivers failing to yield the right of way also seemed to be a factor. Schey told the committee that he wasn’t sure a flashing sign would help much, but he did think that moving the line on the roadway might help.
Village board and committee member Jim Dobbs said there were worse intersections.
Highway superintendent Blaine Pfeffer told the committee that two large trees could be removed. The cost to put in blinker stop signs would cost $4,500.
Village board member and public works committee member Kathy Trentadue stated that is quite a bit of money. Shemade a motion to have village administrator Mark Janiuk contact the church to let them know the village will monitor the area.
The motion carried unanimously.
