The outpouring of support from the metro-Racine area for the Wisconsin Humane Society’s care of almost 100 animals rescued last week from filthy conditions at a local shelter and two residences has been nothing short of amazing.
People have dropped off food, toys, treats, beds and more, but care for the 81 dogs – some of whom have serious medical conditions – is starting to add up.
“The public response to a call for donations over the weekend truly floored us,” said Alison Kleibor, WHS Racine Campus Director, in a written release. “Every dog will certainly be getting new toys and treats this week, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the help. Monetary donations will help offset housing and medical expenses.”
Nearly all the dogs will move this week to a temporary location in Racine where they will continue to receive care from WHS staff and volunteers, the statement reads. The move “will allow them to best care for the seized dogs, as well as ensure that the organization can continue to conduct its regular services for the communities they serve.”
An Amazon wish list has been established to help WHS care for the dogs. Donations can also be dropped off at the facility on Chicory Road in Mount Pleasant or submitted through the WHS website.
The dogs will be up for adoption at some point, but not until their medical issues are cleared and their behavior has been evaluated.
