ed3c3867dcad692d02cdc0d60e76fd2eThe LGBT Community in Racine will be protesting in front of the Racine County Courthouse at 11 a.m. Friday after Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen decided to hold off issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.

Christensen told several couples on Monday that she would not issues the licenses until the U.S. District Court issued an order and she receives guidance from the states.

This happened after U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Crabb struck down Wisconsin’s gay marriage ban last week and refused to issue a stay on same sex marriages. Eight couples represented by the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) filed suit in February alleging the constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2006 violated their rights.

Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen filed an appeal against Crabb’s decision in the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and asked that the licenses stop being issued.

According to a story by the Associated Press, 49 counties have issued marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.
