Gateway Telecommunications Bootcamp

A new bootcamp from Gateway Technical College focusing on telecommunications kicks off next month, and applications are available now for interested students.

The telecom bootcamp runs 12 weeks, and participants are required to attend eight hours a day, five days a week. At completion, students will be qualified entry-level telecom cable installers and have earned some college credits they can apply toward a degree program.

According to the Gateway website, coursework will focus on:

  • Copper and fiber optic termination
  • Termination, basic testing and troubleshooting
  • Fire stopping and fire safety practices – install fire stop systems in classroom simulations
  • Industry, codes and standards, industry best practices, and professionalism

The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts up to five percent growth in this industry over the next eight years. Average median salary is over $50,000, but newly minted installers can reasonably expect to make around $15 an hour.

Applications for the telecom bootcamp are due by July 25, and the program begins August 18. There is an information session at 1 p.m. at the SC Johnson iMET Center, Room 231, 2320 Renaissance Blvd., in Sturtevant.
