Update 2:30 p.m. Aug. 9:   After having a kidney transplant on Friday morning, Abbi was moved from ICU to a regular room at Children’s Hospital.
Abbi thanked everyone for the prayers and well wishes.
“I’m doing okay. Really tired and a bit sore, but I’m blessed to have so many good friends and family by my side,” she wrote on Facebook.
John Strack Jr., Abbi’s dad, said her lab tests are great and her new kidney is working well.
Update 5:11 p.m.: Abbi Strack is in the Intensive Care Unit, but doing well even though she is heavily sedated, according to her father, John Strack Jr.

“The team of doctors, nurses and tech’s are amazing in the ICU. They are performing lots of tests and monitoring things closely. So far Abbi and her new kidney have hit all benchmarks and things are looking good. Still a tricky time for her and body. Update may be sparse for now as only time will really tell.”
Update 10:45 a.m.: Abbi Strack’s surgery to get a new kidney is completed. Here’s the update from her dad John Strack Jr.
“The Doctor just came out and told us the surgery is finished. It went really well, the kidney looked great and Abbi was stable throughout. They are finishing up and Abbi will be in recovery soon,” John wrote on Facebook.
Update:Â At about 7:50 a.m., John Strack Jr. posted that Abbi was headed into surgery.
“They have now taken Abbi back for surgery. She is in great spirits. Surgery will take about 3 hrs. We will let you know when we hear any news,” John wrote on Facebook.
Original story: At about 5 p.m. Thursday night, 18-year-old Abbi Strack received a phone call that she had been waiting to get — a match had been found and she would be receiving a new kidney.
Strack, who just graduated from Horlick High School in 2014, is now waiting at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee for the transplant to take place.
However, doctors won’t actually be replacing her kidneys. They will be adding a third one and keeping the other two because they aren’t dead, just very low functioning.
“From what we’ve been told there is a match, all the blood work went through, they can’t guarantee that nothing will happen in transport but so far it looks like the transplant will happen tomorrow morning,” wrote John Strack Sr., Abbi’s father via Facebook.
Abbi has had issues with her kidneys and bladder her whole life, but she was admitted to Children’s Hospital ICU
after her kidneys started to decline and she had a blood pressure of 210/180 and an enlarged heart when she was in the sixth grade.
Playing for the Horlick Rebel football team all four years, doctors diagnosed her with stage four kidney failure during her senior year.
She’s the only girl to have played football all four years of high school at Horlick.
“It has continued a quicker downturn after the holidays ending her softball season,” John said. “She was was put on the active transplant list and had surgery for her dialysis fistula on June 17th.”
Jan Strack, Abbi’s mom, said the family doesn’t know anything about the donor, but the surgery is scheduled for 7:30 a.m.
“It’s going to be a long night and morning. Her brothers have been released by Army to be here and are underway, too. Lots happening very quickly,” Jan said.
