Paul Garchek

**Updated 6 p.m.

The man who engaged police in a stand-off early Friday morning that lasted almost two hours was identified as former Racine police officer Paul Garchek, 41.

Garchek resigned from the force in 2010, and charges are expected from the Racine County District Attorney’s office Monday, according to a statement posted on the Racine Police Department’s Facebook page.

Mount Pleasant police say they responded at 4:15 a.m. to WalMart, 3041 Oakes Rd., for a report of a man stealing a television. When an employee confronted the man – later identified as Garchek – he reportedly displayed a handgun.

Police say Garchek fled in his car with the TV. His vehicle was later located in the 3800 block of Lindermann in the City of Racine. Officers from Mount Pleasant, Racine and a K-9 unit from the Racine County Sheriff’s Department responded tactically, setting up a perimeter and blocking off streets.

Garchek surrendered at 6:50 a.m. After he was in custody, officers entered the home for a standard sweep.

Police had both Lindermann and Lathrop Avenues blocked off before 6 a.m. while officers set up a perimeter and surrounded a home. A Racine County Sheriff K9 was requested around 6:30 a.m., and the suspect was detained by 6:50 a.m.

On scene Friday morning, neighbors were awakened to officers ordering a man in the home to come out the front door with his hands raised and said they were not leaving until they made contact with him. The man was told that police knew he was inside and were aware of “what happened earlier.”

Roads surrounding the location were being reopened by 7:15 a.m.Aug 22 Tactical West Racine
