Two seven-old boys and a man were injured after a pit bull attacked them at 12:41 p.m. Saturday at a residence in the 1500 block of Summit Avenue.The two boys were taken to Wheaton Franciscan Hospital — All Saints emergency room and later taken to Froedtert Hospital. The boys have been released from the hospital, but both had to undergo surgery.
One of the boys had both of his ears almost ripped off and suffered from numerous puncture wounds to his body, but surgeons at Children’s Hospital were able to re-attach the boy’s ears. The other boy suffered deep puncture wounds to his torso and legs, said Gary Stewart, an uncle to one of the boys.
The two boys were playing outside on the sidewalk when the owner let the dog out and it broke through the fence, Â Stewart said.
The man who owned the dog put the dog in a van and left the scene.
“He took off and left,” Stewart said. “But right before they transported them to the hospital, we were told the person came back back and he was arrested.”
The family doesn’t blame the dog, but wants to remind dog owners to be responsible for their dog. Stewart said his nephew’s family also owns a pit bull the same color as the one the neighbor has and he believes the two boys thought the dog was coming over to play with them.
“This can happen anywhere, at anytime, with any breed of dog if you don’t train them properly,” Stewart said. “Pit bulls get a bad rep because they’re typically much stronger then other breeds, so the damage is more severe. Please just do your best to restrain your dogs so this doesn’t have to happen again to some other family. They may not get to have their kids come back home like our families did.”
