The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will once again stop in Sturtevant, raising money, food and awareness for the Racine County Food Bank.

CP officials made the announcement to the Sturtevant Village Board Thursday. The train has been stopping in Sturtevant since 2003, by-passing the village only once in 2011.

“(This is) great news! Let’s make this year better than ever!” Village President Steve Jansen said.

Santa, live musical entertainment and a full-size, brightly wrapped locomotive will pull into the Sturtevant train depot at approximately 5:25 p.m. Sun., Dec. 7.

The Holiday Train is an tour through the Upper Midwest helps draw attention to the need of local food banks. All food and cash donations collected in Sturtevant stay with the Racine County Food Bank. A check from the railroad for the Food Bank is also presented during the stop.

Visitors to the train in 2013 donated 2,450 pounds of food and $4,805 in cash.

This year, though, CP Rail officials through CP Has Heart also wants to call attention to how eating healthy helps boost heart health.

“Our focus is on improving the heart health of men, women and children in communities across North America because heart disease impacts all of us. By 2020, heart disease will be the leading cause of death in the world,” the letter reads. “So, new this year, our Holiday Train program will focus not only on collecting food donations for food banks and food shelves across our network but on encouraging those who attend our events that they should be donating heart healthy foods.”

Details about musical entertainment and confirmation about the date and time will get firmed up in the coming weeks.
