A Racine man was charged with two felonies after he allegedly stole items from a garage at St. Catherine’s High School, one of the items belonged to one of the nuns, according to a criminal complaint by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.
Carlos Megron, 32, was charged with two burglary charges on Friday by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office. If convicted of both counts, Megron faces up to 25 years in prison and/or fines up to $50,000.
According to the criminal complaint, officers with the Racine Police Department were called to St. Catherine’s High School, 1200 Park Ave., on Sept. 8. An employee told police that a leaf blower, weed eater, chain saw, bicycle, and air compressor were discovered missing and that the suspect may have been caught on video tape. The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between Sept. 5 and Sept. 7.
Three days later, police were called back to the school after a telescope was discovered missing during a second burglary, which occurred sometime between 11 p.m. Sept. 10 and 7 a.m. Sept. 11.
On Sept. 18, investigators learned that Megron had tried to sell the bicycle and air compressor to a boy. Megron told the boy that he had won the bicycle in a raffle and the boy bought it for $60. Because the bicycle had identifying information on it of who actually owned the bicycle, the boy told police that the original owner was a nun at St. Catherine’s.
Megron, who is currently in police custody, had his bail set at $2,500. A preliminary hearing has been set for 9 a.m. Sept. 25, 2014.
