A Racine woman stole items off a shopping list, according to police, and left hundreds of dollars in damaged merchandise in her wake after passing through Walmart last month.
Kayla M. Ingeman, 24, is charged with retail theft and criminal damage to property, both misdemeanors. She is charged as a repeat offender, which means if convicted, she could be sentenced to two years for each offense.
Mount Pleasant police officers were sent to Walmart, 3049 S. Oakes Road, at 4 p.m. Aug. 24, after staff reported someone tried to leave the store with two full carts of merchandise. According to court records, store staff said  Ingeman arrived at the store at 5 a.m. and had been there for about 12 hours, moving three full carts through the store.
Staff watched her select handbags and purses, then hide things inside them, according to the criminal complaint. She eventually checked out, paying for about $70 in merchandise, then left the filled handbags inside the store. Loss prevention staff determined the hidden merchandise was worth $1,636.18.
The stolen merchandise store staff found in her cart was worth $473.33, and that she left behind damaged items worth $468.76, the criminal complaint states. Police reported that after Ingeman’s arrest, they discovered a four-page shopping list, with several of the items she is accused of stealing listed on it.
Ingeman is due to make her initial appearance on the charges next month.
