The driver and passenger in a car that ended up on its roof, on fire, and in the basement of a downtown apartment building both suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in an overnight crash.
Racine police Sgt. Jessie Metoyer confirmed in a press release that officers at 3:25 a.m. Friday observed a 2001 Monte Carlo traveling southbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed. The driver of the car apparently lost control of the vehicle on the Main Street bridge, went airborne and struck a pole, sheering it off at the base. The car then crashed into the basement of the building at 134 Main Street, rolled and came to rest on its roof.
The driver – later identified as Kenneth Davidson, 48, of Racine – was trapped inside of the burning car, and his passenger, a 45-year-old woman, also of Racine, was trapped underneath. Police began extinguishing the flames and rendering aid to the victims. Racine firefighters also responded and took over rescue operations.
Davidson and his passenger were transported to Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s for treatment and Davidson was later taken to Froedtert Hospital. Both suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Metoyer said in the release that Davidson is facing a third operating while intoxicated charge and a charge of reckless driving.
This accident remains under investigation.
