Whether or not the Racine Unified referendum is approved next week, district residents are being asked to join one of two advisory committees tasked with improving schools.
Racine Unified Superintendent Lolli Haws told Mount Pleasant trustees earlier this month during a presentation that the Technology Advisory Council and the Facilities Advisory Council will oversee projects in those areas and split off into smaller committees to tackle specifics.
“We want to be very accountable to the community,” Haws said. “These councils will actually decide what kinds of schools to build, and make recommendations on priorities for the $128 million in maintenance.”
She described the councils as important on-going community work so the referendum money is used “in the best way.”
The technology group will make recommendations on how best to use the approximately $1 million allocated each year for enhanced technology.
“Should we buy laptops for students or just high school; should we buy iPads, what kind of career tech ed equipment do we need and how can we work with the business community to partner with us?” Haws added. “We’re seeking people who would be interested in that planning and making recommendations so our students have the most opportunity to benefit.”
