Tuesday will dawn bright and bitterly cold with temperatures in the low single digits and wind chills hovering around -14 in Racine County.
Meteorologists at WISN 12 News posted in their weather blog that high temperatures will only reach into the low 20s.
“High temperatures on both Monday and Tuesday will reside in the low 20s, some 20+ degrees below average!” they write. “Add in winds of at least 10-20mph and you are looking at wind chills in the single digits above and below zero.”
David Maack, head of Racine County Emergency Management, urged residents in a written statement to take care in the cold by layering clothing. He noted that mittens are better than gloves and wearing a hat can make a big difference.
“It is important to dress for the weather. Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothes in layers (because) trapped air insulates,” he wrote. “Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded. Don’t forget to cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.”
It’s also important to remember that animals should not be kept outside during these dangerously low temperatures. Residents are asked to keep an eye out for neighborhood pets to be sure they aren’t left outside without any protection.
There is good news coming this weekend, though. WISN Chief Meteorologist Mark Baden says warmer air – and rain – is on deck for Sunday.
