A new member of the Caledonia Fire Department had the first save of his career after he rescued a kitten trapped in a sewer behind the Pick’n Save grocery store, 5111 Douglas Ave., according to battalion chief Jeff Henningfeld.
Firefighters from station 12 were called at 3:28 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 to assist the Caledonia Police Department in the rescue effort.
Probationary firefighter Brandon Boettcher, who has been on the department since June, helped remove the manhole cover and saved the kitten. The animal control officer with the police department took the kitten, who was found in good condition, to the Wisconsin Humane Society.
Henningfeld said that Boettcher had the makings of being a “true hero.”
When asked of Boettcher would endure future ribbing from fellow firefighters about his first save, Henningfeld said “Of course.”
