Sturtevant trustees will meet Thursday to vote on whether or not the April ballot will include a question asking residents if they would like to explore a school district independent of Racine Unified.

The special board meeting is at 6 p.m. at Village Hall, 2801 89th Street.

Board members decided Tuesday to hold the special meeting after a discussion of whether or not officials should pursue the advisory referendum, which is one question, or send Sturtevant residents a multi-question survey. That list of questions could have included the yes-or-no about moving forward as well as questions about potential tax implications, Village Administrator/Clerk Mary Cole said.

“I think we’re forgetting that the intent behind the referendum is, before spending dime one of taxpayer money on this, we need to gauge their interest so we can budget appropriately for a study in 2016,” Trustee Chris Larsen said.

Cole suggested the survey in place of the referendum question, in part, because there was some uncertainty if the neighboring villages of Caledonia and Mount Pleasant were also going to include a referendum question on their April ballots.

But, after learning that Caledonia trustees will meet Wednesday to discuss the same thing during their own special board meeting, Sturtevant trustees agreed to Thursday’s meeting.

There is also a rush to get the referendum question phrased because the deadline to submit the question to the county is 5 p.m. Tues,, Jan. 27.

Village attorneys will prepare the resolution trustees must approve to add the referendum to the April ballot as well as the question itself.
