An 80-year-old woman died Tuesday night after her car crashed into a snowbank near Ridgewood Care Center in Mount Pleasant.
Racine County Medical Examiner Michael Payne confirmed that Audrey Galati of Racine was the victim of the accident. He said she had extensive medical history and appears to have died from a heart attack.
Police Sgt. Eric Relich said in a written statement that A witness saw the woman’s car move through the intersection of Durand Avenue and Wood Road on a red light and almost cause an accident there before suddenly accelerating, crashing into a sign post and then coming to rest on a snowbank near Ridgewood.
Officers and rescue crews from South Shore Fire Department responded to the scene and performed life-saving measures on Galati, but she was pronounced dead at Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s a short time later.
Galati was the only person injured in the accident.
