Mount Pleasant police say a 30-year-old Cudahy man is facing felony theft charges after he admitted he stole $1,400 worth of liquor from Pick ‘n Save.
Jeffrey P. Miller was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with two felony counts of retail theft, both as a repeater. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison and/or up to $20,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called on both Jan. 27 and 29 to Pick ‘n Save, 1202 N. Green Bay Road, for reports of a man who would put several bottles of liquor in a cart and then cover them with bags of dog food and packages of toilet paper before walking out of the store without paying.
Police say on Jan. 27, the man – later identified as Miller – took 22 bottles of alcohol, dog food, and toilet paper for a total of $657.20. Then, on Jan. 29 Miller walked out of the store with four, 12-packs of soda, several more bottles of liquor, more dog food, and toilet paper for a total of $762.75.
The man was wearing the same Green Bay Packers jacket on both occasions and officers wrote in their report they recognized him as wanted in other retail thefts in communities throughout Southeast Wisconsin, the complaint reads. When officers made contact with Miller he said he stole the alcohol to sell to friends and bars in Milwaukee to pay for his drug habit.
Miller remains in the Racine County Jail on a $400 cash bond. He will next be in court March 11 for his preliminary hearing.
