Students at Janes and and Giese Elementary schools put their best change forward by collecting over $3,400 combined to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Every year, Olive Garden restaurants launch a Pennies for Pasta campaign to encourage students to help patients suffering from leukemia and lymphoma, according to an email newsletter from Racine Unified.
This year, students at both Janes participated, and their enthusiasm got a bump when Principal Walter Robles said he would shave his head if kids raised $1,000. Then, first grade teacher Susan Slater sweetened the pot by saying she would shave her head, too, if students raised $1,500.
Janes students came through in a big way, raising $1,905 locally and another $710 online from donors in other states.
Both Robles and Slater went under the clippers Friday to keep their end of the deal.
Giese Elementary students contributed another $800, bringing the total raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to $3,415.
