The Pick’n Save store located at 2210 Rapids Drive will not be renewing its lease and the store will close by the end of the year, said James Hyland, a spokesman for Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc., which owns Pick’n Save.
The 66 employees who work at the store were told about the company’s decision on Wednesday that despite putting in a number of initiatives at the store to stay competitive, the long-term performance did not produce the results it need to meet the company’s business goals, Hyland said in an email.
“Although lease expiration is not until year-end, we wanted to notify these employees well in advance in order to ensure a smooth transition over the remainder of the year,” he said.
Mayor John Dickert said in a statement that he was in contact with Pick’n Save to work with them to revitalize the neighborhood, but there are other developers on the horizon to work on future development.
Dickert relased the following statement:
“While it is unfortunate they (Pick’n Save) have decided to discontinue their operation, we have begun discussions with potential developers who will look at the Rapids Plaza as a potential opportunity for growth. It’s always unfortunate when a business closes in Racine, so where one door closes, we look to open another.
“But the city will not sit by and wait for an opportunity to present itself, we must seek out those who may take the property and create something great, give them to the tools necessary to help business thrive in our community.”
