Sturtevant trustees will hear comments and concerns Wednesday about rezoning the Sturtevant SportsPlex from industrial to commercial so the Renaissance School can set up shop there for a K4 – 8th grade private school.
Renaissance is a private school, and many of its students attend using state-funded vouchers. Lutheran Urban Mission Initiative (LUMIN) is the organization that operates the schools.
Renaissance officials and SportsPlex owner Fernando Bahena reached an agreement late last year. The school will lease the building to consolidate its two campuses – Mount Pleasant and Pleasant Prairie – and the SportsPlex would surrender its liquor license, effectively ending the legal trouble Bahena has had in the 3 Monkeys bar.
The rezone is necessary because village ordinances prohibit institutional, church, and non-profit uses under industrial zoning, but those uses are allowed under a commercial designation.
