The Sturtevant Board of Canvass conducted Friday turned the election for village trustee on its head.
When the polls closed, incumbent John Johnson trailed resident Michelle Duchow by one vote, 366 to 367, respectively.
But absentee ballots received this week have flipped that result, and Duchow trailed Johnson by a vote, 367 to 368.
On Election Night, Johnson told The Journal Times he would probably request a recount if the absentee ballots didn’t widen the distance between the two candidates.
Duchow was not present at the canvass, but a man believed to be her lawyer was present. A message to Duchow about whether or not she plans to ask for a recount has not yet been returned. We will update the story when we hear from her.
In addition to the trustee race, the canvass confirmed election night vote totals for village president and municipal judge.
The Board of Canvass will meet at Village Hall, 2801 89th Street. Call (262) 886-7200.
