Racine police say a teenager shot a woman Wednesday with a BB gun and is now facing felony charges.
Andrew Walker was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with one count of 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, a woman at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday was walking in the 1700 block of Ohio Street when she heard a loud pop and felt a sting in her leg. When she reached down to check her leg, she noticed blood on her hand so she knocked on the door of a nearby home for help. The woman was transported to Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s for treatment, and X-rays showed a BB-like item near her ankle.
Police say the woman saw a white Pontiac Grand Am or Grand Prix leaving the scene.
Officers received a report a couple of hours later for a weapons violation in the 1900 block of Linden Avenue, the complaint reads. Several suspects – including Walker – were located in a white Grand Am and taken to the police department for questioning.
Police say Walker admitted to purchasing a BB gun at Dick’s Sporting Goods and driving around with his friends while shooting out of the window. He knew he hit the woman but said he wasn’t aiming for her and she didn’t indicate that she’d been hit. Walker told officers he and his friends continued to drive around shooting at things like stop signs.
Walker was assigned a $1,000 cash bond Thursday during his initial appearance, but online jail records do not list him as still in custody. Walker’s next court date is April 22 for a preliminary hearing.
