Mount Pleasant police say a 30-year-old Racine man is facing charges after he tried to steal a birthday cake to celebrate his birthday.

Terrell Cobbs was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one count each of misdemeanor retail Terrell Cobbstheft and bail jumping and one count of felony bail jumping, all as a repeater. If convicted, he faces up to 7-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $30,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called Sunday to Walmart, 3049 S. Oakes Road, for a report of shoplifting. When police arrived, store security had a man, later identified as Cobbs, in their office after they stopped him with a variety of items – including a decorated birthday cake – past the last point of purchase.

Officers say Cobbs admitted to taking the items and said, “Can I just get my cake, it’s my birthday,” several times, including offering to pay for everything. In addition to the cake, the defendant is accused of taking candles, wings, snack food, socks, neckties, a cheesecake and cupcakes. The register total for the goods would have been $104.72 (including tax).

Cobbs told police he went to Walmart to get a cake for his birthday, but he had no intention of stealing anything, the complaint reads. After he gathered a number of other items, he just decided to walk out of the store without paying. “I have a full deck, I just don’t always have all the cards,” he told officers. He also said he needed to be a man and accept the consequences of his actions.

Cobbs remains in the Racine County Jail on a $250 cash bond. His next court date is May 6 for a preliminary hearing.
