The Racine Unified school board voted Monday to approve construction of two new schools and an addition on Gifford to expand the student body there to offer K – 8 education. All construction is expected to complete in time for students in Fall 2016.

Knapp rendering

Described as a community school, the new Knapp Elementary will be built on land adjacent to the current building. According to RUSD, a community school, “builds partnerships with community resources to focus on academic, health, social services and community development and engagement.” The District will partner with United Way to develop community programming.

Olympia Brown rendering

Like Knapp, the new Olympia Brown is planned for space near the current building; on 5-½ Mile Road between Charles and Middle Roads. O. Brown will have K4 – 5th grade and will have a potential science focus, a district newsletter reads.

Gifford School rendering

Gifford is getting a two-story addition for grades 6 – 8 that will include a separate gym and cafeteria. Elementary students will attend school during construction.

The new schools and Gifford addition are being paid for as part of the $128 million referendum voters approved in November.
