Mount Pleasant police say a 46-year-old Racine woman panicked and fled the scene of an accident she caused last February that left a toddler in critical condition.
Lisa Lackas will go before a judge on May 14 for her initial appearance to face a single felony charge of hit and run causing injury. If convicted, she faces up to nine months in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines. Lackas had her initial appearance adjourned so she can find an attorney.
According to the criminal complaint, Lackas was driving a silver truck around 6 p.m. Feb. 8 when she struck a sedan that was executing a left turn and fled the scene. The car occupants included two women and two children. One of the children was taken to Wheaton Franciscan for their injuries, and the other child was flown by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital with life threatening injuries.
Police say witnesses provided the plate number, and they traced it to an address in the City of Racine. When officers arrived at the home, they observed a woman – later identified as Lackas – exit a vehicle with heavy front-end damage. She admitted to being at the scene of the accident and that she fled because she didn’t know what to do. A relative told police he thought Lackas drove away because she didn’t have insurance on the car.
