The case against an Illinois man accused of killing his estranged wife last fall with a hatchet is continuing forward.
Cristian Loga-Negru, 38, of Arlington Heights, IL, is charged with 1st degree intentional homicide, mayhem and kidnapping. He is being held without bond at the Racine County Jail after he allegedly killed Roxana Abrudan at the Mount Pleasant home of her boss. She reportedly fled there to escape her abusive marriage with Loga-Negru.
Autopsy results show that Abrudan died of “multiple chop wounds and blunt force injuries.” In addition to several deep lacerations to her head, Abrudan suffered broken bones in her face and head, chop wounds to both hands and cuts and bruises on her legs.
After the defense filed its demand for discovery and inspection last December, online court records indicate that step is complete, but there is physical evidence at the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
“There is physical evidence that parties will look at in person at MPPD,” the record reads from Loga-Negru’s status conference April 21.
Racine County Circuit Court Judge Eugene Gasiorkiewcz last December agreed with mental health professionals that Loga-Negru was competent to stand trial, a ruling with which the defendant agreed. Loga-Negru officially entered a not guilty plea on Dec. 30.
If he is convicted of the homicide charge alone, Loga-Negru faces life in prison, and many years beyond life for the additional felonies.
The next status conference is set for June 22.
