Sturtevant police say a 40-year-old Milwaukee man tried to steal over $3,000 from a Kenosha company but walked away from the bank leaving his driver’s license behind.
Jeffrey Johnson was supposed to be formally charged with two felony counts of forgery and one felony count of attempted fraud against a bank. If he’s convicted, Johnson could spend up to 15 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, Johnson in October 2014 at Community State Bank in Sturtevant tried to cash a check from the account of Kenosha Refrigeration out of Bristol, WI, in the amount of $3261.33. When he presented the check to a teller, it was already endorsed but also included Johnson’s social security number. The defendant also presented his driver’s license.
Police say the teller thought the situation was suspicious so she went to the back to call the owner of Kenosha Refrigeration because there is a business account for them at the bank. A man told the teller that the check she was holding was fake because the check number she said was still in his checkbook.
While the teller was on the phone she witnessed Johnson leave the bank only to return less than a minute later. He checked for his license but then walked out again, the complaint reads. He left in an unknown direction by himself, according to witnesses.
Johnson was a no-show in court Thursday, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest, online court records read.
