Edward Johnson spends eight hours a day at the intersection of State and Marquette Streets selling water and soda to passing motorists. He says it’s to help him support his family, including twin boys.

Johnson passes the time by keeping himself and drivers entertained by dancing and flipping one of his homemade signs in the air and catching it. Sometimes delivery is smooth and other times the wind gets under the sign and takes it away, making Johnson scramble into the street to retrieve it.

Unlike the unusually cool weather last summer – which negatively impacted his daily sales – Johnson said he’s doing pretty brisk business so far this year.

“The heat this week helps,” he acknowledged.

Johnson takes up his spot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Water goes for $1.
