The William Horlick High School music program was recently awarded a $2,000 grant from the Summerfest Foundation.
Horlick Music Director Ellen Christensen accepted the check from Don Smiley, President of Summerfest Foundation, Inc. Nine other area schools were also awarded, and checks were presented outside the south gate at the Summerfest grounds.
The money – through the Foundation’s first year of Music Education Grant program – will be used to purchase guitars and various supplies, Christensen told Racine Unified.
Summerfest’s music grant program was started to give students who wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to music the opportunity to participate in instrumental music programs.
“We are thrilled to help keep music education alive in our local schools and youth-serving organizations,” Smiley said. “These programs are essential to help youth develop both discipline and creativity and we are proud to support the 10 grant recipients who work hard to ensure that arts programming is available to children in our community.”
