Thanks to a grant from the Racine Community Foundation, two city community centers will keep their doors open for at least the next six months.
Both Tyler-Domer, on 12th Street next to Park High School, and Humble Park, 2200 block of Blaine, were slated to close except for special events like rentals, a story in The Journal Times reads. Money was found to keep the centers open for the summer, and $10,000 of the grant will keep the doors open through the end of 2015.
The grant totals just over $35,000 and actually comes from the James E. Lockwood City Park Fund that was created in the mid-1980s to maintain Lockwood Park on Graceland Avenue, the story continues. Some funds can also get used at other city parks.
Jeanne Brenner oversees both locations, and she told the newspaper that the good news about the community centers was more than welcome.
“The amount of kids that we get in here … I don’t know what they would do if (the city) closed these centers,” she is quoted as saying. “They would be devastated. It is not just a place to go. It’s like a second home. It would be like shutting down your family.”

Summer hours:
- 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday
- 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
- 9 a.m. to Noon Friday
School year hours are 2:45 to 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday
Humble Park operating hours:
Summer hours:
- 12 to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday
- 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday
- 12 to 3 p.m. Friday
School year hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Monday thru Thursday; closed Fridays
