Racine police say a 26-year-old Racine woman tried to avoid arrest by disguising herself as an old woman. She is accused of helping a man inject heroin who almost died.
Sunshine Ketchum was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of bail jumping 
and two misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted, she could face up to six years, two months in prison and/or up to $11,000 in fines.
She was also officially re-charged with six felony bail jumping charges; one felony count each of heroin possession, 1st degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of marijuana; and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted of these charges, Ketchum faces up to 60 additional years in prison and/or up to $125,000 more in fines.
Ketchum was out of jail after first being charged last month in connection with the overdose of Joshua Molnar, of Caledonia. Because she was admitted to the hospital, the charges against her were dismissed but were then refiled. When Ketchum didn’t make her court appearance, a warrant was issued for her arrest.
According to the criminal complaint, Racine police received a report Wednesday that Ketchum was at the Riverside Inn, 3700 Northwestern Avenue, and it appeared she was wearing a wig and costume to disguise her appearance. Ketchum was also walking with a cane, and when officers told her about the warrant for her arrest, she said she thought the charges had been dropped.
Police say they searched Ketchum and found a heroin kit in her coat pocket containing:
- 7 syringes
- 2 metal caps with burn marks
- Cotton balls
- Blue, rubber tourniquet
A search of Ketchum’s purse turned up a “crack pipe” and several ID cards issued by various agencies in a number of different names, the complaint reads. When officers asked how she got the cards, Ketchum said she found them.
Because she is pregnant, Ketchum had to be medically cleared before she was booked into the Racine County Jail. Officers also say they contacted the Department of Human Services because Ketchum admitted to Racine County Sheriff’s deputies that she used heroin within days of her arrest and Percocet the day before.
Ketchum remains in the Racine County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond. She will next be in court July 9 for her preliminary hearing on both the heroin overdose case and the new charges.
